The only common feature running through these stories is a grown-up protagonist somehow coming face-to-face with his childhood past, in a testament to the loss of youth, the disillusionment of growing old, and nostalgia for better times. In the Adachi pantheon, this is a rare diametric view of his eternal theme of "youth," in this case youth as seen through the lens of the past. It's a powerful statement from Adachi that might even be an acknowledgment of his steadily-creeping age. What is impressive about these stories is not the plots or characters themselves, but the absolutely perfect way he tells them, another facet of experience that comes with age. What one could call the main story (because there is one episode in each volume) is telling of the girl Yoshiko who has pushed her friend into a deep fountain. Unfortunately this boy dies in this accident and Yoshiko now feels guilty towards the boy's younger brother Goro. In some time steps the reader is following their uncertain relationship. Despite the name, Shonen Shojo is not a book for children. Often the stories end abruptly and leave a lot of space for interpretations.

The manga is divided into three episodes: The Myth of the Laurel Tree, The Eden Garden Fantasia, and Midsummer Night's Fantasy. The Myth of the Laurel Tree: The story makes references to the story between Apollo and a nymph he met in Greek mythology, although this information is not required to enjoy the it. Laurel (*hint, hint) and her younger sister are supposed to go to Egypt for another one of her "stone-collecting" vacations. However, things take an unexpected turn as soon as she meets a young man named Apollo (*hint, hint) who, in many girls eyes, may be too beautiful for words. For example, instead of being on a plane to Egypt, as she originally planned, the plane is hijacked by two odd terrorists to change course to Greece--even though that is already the intended destination!
